Hi! I’m Mariem ELTagoury.
I am a pharmacy graduate from German University Cairo, of the age where numbers don’t matter.
If you’ve come this far you’re probably one of the following:
1- A talent looking for a chance to turn his/her hobby into a profession.
2- A talent who hasn’t decided whether it’s a good idea to turn his/her hobby into a profession but wants to see what could become of it.
3- A talent who leads a well-balanced life, and takes his/her hobbies just as seriously as anything else.
Whatever it is…… welcome!
A couple of years back when I was introduced to the online world; I was quite surprised that despite the presence of thousands of young Egyptians who follow the online sphere daily, there wasn’t one website that represented us, the average Cairo youth, or our lifestyle.
I was basically an open-minded college student with a life lead within a conservative society. That doesn’t mean I’m an introvert or anything, I just respect our society’s traditions, rich culture and history as well as our right to know, explore and create. All I found on the internet was either the western culture selling itself as an unquestionable product, or extremists abusing our traditions making a laughing stock of us online. I believe in a modern world, a community that lives in “this” time while preserving the traditions in “that” time, those that help define who we are and what we stand for.
My question was “why aren’t there writers on the scene reflecting the mainstream Cairo youth?”
That was when I realized I could do something about it. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, I was lucky to have had a good, serious education in all writing forms in English, my studying of Advanced Subsidiary English added the editing skills. Hence, Cairo Contra was born.
As we grew from a college blog by students to an official magazine, I found myself in a position of mentoring younger talents. It is in that moment that I found my life purpose. I dedicated my time afterwards to study and become a Professional Certified Trainer from the American University Cairo. Training every Contra Talent became my goal, and with every piece we publish my heart dances with pride…. but what of the other talents out there?!
We branched out created Contra Workshops dedicated to making customized workshops in different entities [schools, universities, you name it…]. There is nothing as fulfilling as helping the youth of tomorrow expand their talents, spread them out, and fly to a more fulfilling future.
Check out our website and follow us to support the massive young talent we’re proud to call Contras.
