The VMA’s were held last Sunday, and so much has changed since then! Beyonce is the new Madonna, Drake professed his love for Rihanna on stage, Rihanna wasn’t up for PDA [WHAT!?], Britney made yet another come-back… and the celebs got to prove to us that there’s still more crazy left in the world when it comes to fashion.
The VMAs are known for having a fun dress code, which most celebs interpret as going all out, as crazy as possible and loosing shirts on the way, so here’s the recap, in case you missed the freak… I mean the VMAs!
Top 5 Best Dressed
Here are our favourite looks of the night, in no particular order:
Hailee Steinfeld in Balmain
American actress, model, and singer dressed looked lovely in this colourful crochet number from the Balmain Resort 2017 collection. It’s not just the uniqueness of the dress I love, but how she pulled it off flawlessly with gold heels and a light blue mani & pedi that match the blue in her dress. It’s bold enough to fit the VMAs but flattering enough to have us think of adding more colorful items to our own wardrobes this fall.
Holland Roden in KAYAT
Teen Wolf star Holland Roden looked quite elegant in a white cape and jumpsuit. We’re glad she saved the crazy for her glitter roots; subtle but crazy… the kind we like! Holland Roden adds sparkle, and this look definitely got me hooked; its comfortable, beautiful and daring, which can be difficult balance at times. The cape trend is one we’ll be definitely keeping an eye out for.
Sasheer Zamata in C/Meo Collective
Comedian & actress Sasheer Zamata looked quite sexy in this two-piece number from Australian C/Meo Collective. She accented her look with a silver clutch and accessories with black pointed tow heels. We love the sophisticated turn this look has taken in spite of the frill and crop top; overall a fun outfit for the VMAs.
Tinashe in Juan Carlos Obando
Not only did the singer look incredible in ensemble, but it also showed of some killer stylist skills, as she rocked the same outfit Blake Lively did in the Cannes Festival last spring, but with different styling taste. Kudos to this lady’s stylist!
Zara Larsson in vintage Thierry Mugler
In the midst of the chaos of outfits in the VMAs, this was a pleasant surprise. Zara Larsson’s stylist has the right to give an entire interview for this one of a kind piece. If you don’t recall the designer, you’ll recall his star shaped perfume, Angel, which was quite popular in the 90s. The dress has this timeless elegance which Zara modernizes with her sleek back no fuss hair. The overall feel is a balanced mixture of retro, futuristic beauty to it.
Other Noteworthy Looks
Ansel Elgort in Dior Homme
The fault in Our Stars actor & DJ looked quite unique in an all-black ensemble, embellished with chains. We don’t see many men pushing fashion boundaries, this outfit has a cool but chic vibe, we approve!
Taylor Hill in Moschino
Leave it to this crazy designer to turn what might look like a fuchsia sequin burnt hazard into a sexy asymmetrical mesh dress. While this wasn’t one of my favourite looks but the model & Victoria Secrets model looked fantastic still.
Rihanna in haute couture Alexandre Vauthier
Rihanna may have not graced the red carpet but how could we not mention her final performance dress! The silk collared gown with full puffy sleeves (not the snow white kind), accented by a grommet belt; it was a dress fit for a hip-hop princess, the professed drake love moment and the honourable Vangaurd MJ prize.
The outfits that we just couldn’t make up our minds about…
Britney Spears in Julien Macdonald
On one hand this skater figure look alike dress is kind of unique and has a sexy twist to it, but did it flatter the pop star?
We get that Arianna started out as a teen star, what we can’t get is why she’s not growing out of it! this outfit could have easily slipped into one of the best, with lace and dress pants, if the top wasn’t just too itsy bitsy like a 3-old bikini top!
The VMA’s is all about having fun with what you wear, and there is something likable about Dascha’s outfit. Remember when embellished jeans were in she just brought them back. The silk top with a train on jeans has its hate and love moments; on one hand she does look gorgeous plus jeans are comfier than gowns, on another perhaps our usual dressy expectations got in the way?! This one is for you to decide!
Least Favourite Looks
After seeing the train of fashion catastrophes in this VMAs this list was kind of hard to put together, but here it goes… [you can always add extras in the comments below!]
Alicia Keys in Just Cavalli
You’ll be happy to know that your mamma’s laundry galebeya just hit the red carpet! That being said we’d like to add that we loved Alicia’s hair and we don’t blame her for keeping up with her no-makeup resolution which such a beautiful face.
Beyonce in Francesco Scognamiglio Couture
Beyonce might be Queen of the music industry at this point but she definitely didn’t score points in my fashion book. Her gown just had too much going on for my taste; there’s the nudeness, the bling bling (are these sequins?!), the feathers, the belt, with so much happening it felt like Queen Bey was lost in madness.
Speaking of madness, remember those pictures of you as a kid in cute embarrassing outfits, that your mom, to your discomfort, insists on showing every relative that crosses your threshold. How lucky do you feel at a scale of Blue Ivy Carter to 10?
Fifth Harmony’s Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane Hansen, Ally Brooke, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jauregui
Fifth Harmony is one of these singer groups that has quickly caught fire on the scene for their songs with lyric variations of something with the meaning “we’re sexy, c’mon help yourself, there’s five of us”. Their voices are fine but the songs seem to have no purpose. Anyhow, here they’ve stunned me with their horribly thought wardrobe and how hilariously they resemble some of the trashiest get-ups in the Middle East. Normani Kordei looks like she was inspired by Haifa in that music video Breathing You In. Dinah Jane Hansen strongly resembles a younger less glamorous Maya Diab. Lauren Jauregi makeup & outfit brings to mind Ayten Amer. Alley Brooke was a sea monster of her own right. As for Camila Cabello, she reminds me of someone but I can’t seem to make out a name… why don’t you give this one a shot in the comments below?
Rita Ora in Marc Jacobs
The singer has seen better days…. We’re guessing she tripped into a big container of acid along the way, grabbed a jacket and kept going! If that doesn’t explain the outfit, it at least explains the shreds of hair left on her scalp!
Kim Kardashian West in vintage John Galliano
We can always count on Kim to wear lingerie to show off some extra boob and still call it a dress!
