Hello everyone! I'm Dina Khaled, a 22-year-old Interior design student and maybe a fictional character in another life. My hobbies include binging TV Shows, movie marathons, painting my nails, and reading. I can also download movies like a boss and make cheesecake and lasagna from scratch. A movie enthusiast since I was a baby, my taste was shaped on Disney and that one rogue Batman movie. Hence my first memory of movies is a penguin and a giant yellow duck, (which only a few will understand.) I'll be writing in the Films & TV section, obviously, spreading glitter on every piece.

Every year we celebrate our birthdays in different ways. Some go out with a large group of friends, and some have family gatherings. Others, though, like me, dread the day all year long out of fear of the disappointment they feel when they expect the day to be special and it turns out to be just another day of the year, and they end up sad and alone, possibly in tears, in their rooms.

As a way to avoid sadness, I developed an escape plan out of spending your birthday doing nothing, which is, of course, movies. They are an easy way to have a good time and go somewhere far away from reality. Sometimes they help you cry your eyes out, lift your spirits and make you feel that it's okay and things could be better next year. So, to help some of you lonely and melancholy people, I put together a list of movies that will make you think about what's important, inspire you to look at the big picture and know that there are many good things to be thankful for.

What these movies have in common is that they will encourage you to appreciate life, your family, and yourself.

Here are the movies to watch when you're sad and alone on your birthday:

  1. Eat, Pray, Love

Through this movie, Julia Roberts takes a journey of wisdom, humor, and self-discovery. Its story will give you a nice window of hope on a lonely day. Plus, seeing all the places she visited, and all the food she ate, I mean come on, you're smiling just reading this. This movie encourages the understanding of how important one's journey is. It's all about your life, your heart, and your soul. It's appreciating your own story, you're own self, no matter what happens along the way. It all leads you to exactly where you're meant to be. This movie is perfect for a little me time, aka, a lonely birthday.

2. Enchanted

This upbeat whimsical movie will get you out of your head and birthday blues, and into a magical New York where birds sing and the sun shines brighter. It will make you dance, sing, and wish you can make fabulous dresses out of your bedroom's curtains. It will take you back to your old Disney princesses days, restore your appreciation for old fashioned, cheesy love stories, and leave you with a wide smile on your face.

3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

This funny adventure will forever remain a classic that will stop you from moping around, especially on your birthday, when you're facing the fact that you are now a year older, and you're somehow stuck in place. It will remind you that it's okay, that you don't have to stress about everything. It's always better to just let go and enjoy a crazy day every once in a while. It is a hilarious piece of crazy inspiration about appreciating life.

4. Howl's Moving Castle

This is one of Hayao Miyazaki’s less depressing movies and his most romantic in my opinion. Howl's Moving Castle will transport you to a different, magical, and enjoyably colorful world, full of sparkling views and strange characters. This movie fights off the darkness and comes out a winner. It will make you laugh, appreciate the magic of love and maybe like your imperfections a little bit more. By the end of the movie, you will be wandering around with starry eyes, waiting for a mysterious wizard to sweep you off your feet, maybe literally.

5. The Greatest Showman

This last piece of glittering joy could be the answer to many of your prayers. This movie is shiny, emotional, and relevant. Part of the cure for your loneliness lies in the wonderful soundtracks filling this movie. If you listen to the music and lyrics carefully, I promise you'll be dazzled, touched, and 100 times better by the end of it all. You'll be laughing and breathlessly singing out loud, exactly what you should be doing and watching on your birthday. It's a movie that encourages self-love, following your dreams and realizing that what matters could be right in front of you and you should learn to appreciate it all before it disappears.

BONUS: As a way to end your day on a high note, you can never go wrong with Disney, so go for your own favorite choice of Disney movies. My choice is my childhood best friend, The Lion King.

Spending your birthday alone can be a good thing when you have the comfort of movies

In the end, I believe that spending the day to reflect, laugh, and travel without actually moving from your spot is not so bad. This way, you won't be alone. You will have the company of all these characters and you will go with them on their adventures and experience their joy. Suddenly, you'll realize that your birthday has passed without tears or regrets, and maybe even turned into an unforgettable day.
