Hello, everyone! This is Alaa presenting you with another entry in this month’s “Deciphering Fashion”. I’m taking over this once from our lovely Editor-in-Chief Tago due to her commitment with exams and studying. I wish you the best of luck, Chief! You’re going to nail those exams *prayer hands mode on*

A lot of focus is usually given on women’s wear; how they should dress, how to project their style out there in the most fashionable way possible and how to be a walking model of elegance and well, style. Rarely do fashion people emphasize on what men should be wearing because it’s much simpler for them. All they have to do is throw on a t-shirt, put on a pair of sweatpants or jeans, pull out a pair of converse/sneakers or during hotter days flip flops and there you go! Might as well stay in your PJ’s and never go out!

A man, as much as he is represented by his character and personality, is also represented by his looks, his style and his elegant dominance when it comes to picking his clothes.

So let’s start with a few tips on how to update your wear from a 1.0 version to a stunning 2.0:

1.       Replace T-Shirts and Hoodies with Sweaters and Cardigans

T-shirts and hoodies may be easier and more comfortable to wear but they are not suitable for every occasion. Spice it up a bit with a cardigan over a shirt or a plain sweatshirt coupled up with a slim fit pair of pants and some boots to go along.

Sweatshirt, cardigan, slim fit pants, boots; what more could you ask?

2.       Replace Converse And Sneakers With Boots, Boat Shoes And Lace-Ups

Converse shoes may have made a strong comeback in the 2000’s but they don’t always go with everything and not every occasion. For example, lace up shoes give you a defining look of elegance and all the while, a young fresh look that could make you king of your college campus (or any other place) in no time.

Casual lace-up (dark blue), boots, casual lace up (for a more relaxed look) and boat shoes.

3.       Skinnies Are NOT As Stylish For Men As One Might Think

Add to that, unnerving colors (green, red, yellow…the list just goes on!) and you get yourself an outfit that screams horrid.   From my own personal opinion, going for slim fits or chinos are the best way to promote style while still maintaining the “class for men” bit from the quote I posted earlier on in the article.

Chinos, slim fit pants and jeans are the way to go!

4.       Stock Up On Blazers And Coats

Because nothing says class and style like them! You can also pair a knit imitation blazer with a pair of jeans and some boots and voila! You’re practically a celebrity.

A knit imitation blazer (left) and a military cut coat (right) can make you look like a celebrity.

5.       Pants And Shoes Don’t Have To Match In Color

It’s a debatable point but it is okay to go with brown pants for example and pair them up with a dark blue casual lace-ups. You could still wear brown pants with brown shoes but we’re talking about spicing up your wardrobe not dimming it down.

The casual lace ups and the pants don’t match; a rule we might want to consider.

I hope these tips will come in handy for you; and no thanks necessary when the ladies start noticing you. I was just doing my job. If you have any comments about the tips I shared with you or a few of your own, you could always post them in the comment section below or email us at [email protected]

Until next time!
