Couch Potato Alert!
Couch Potato Alert!

12- I went the last time and my candidate didn’t win! [Part of democracy is allowing others to have their way at times; it’s not always going to be your say! That would be a dictatorship.]

11- I don’t have a ride! [Most commissions (legan) are just a walk away. If not, hitch a ride with a friend or just take a cab!]

10- I’m too busy! [You have two days to vote!]

9- The line is too long, the people there are weird, and it’s too hot! [Should we just wait while the cushion under your behind gets fluffed?]

8- This country has gone to the dogs, I don’t even care anymore! [If you’re wondering about who is responsible for the dismal state of affairs, it is people like YOU who keeping saying stuff like THAT!]

7- I don’t believe I should take part in an elections process I don’t believe in, I made that obvious by sharing every objectionable post on my wall on Facebook! [We don’t either! Evolution didn’t agree with you!]

6- There’s violence on the streets everyday; I fear for my life! [Let’s get this straight; thousands of soldiers and drafted young men are dying for your safety and you won’t danger your ass to go vote to change the current situation for yourself & them!?]

5- I’m angry for the people who are dying and the activists who are getting arrested! [That’s the spirit. You staying home will surely force the powers that be to RETHINK THE CONCEPT OF DEMOCRACY.]

4- My not voting is a vote against the system! [Please, refer to the previous point]

3- Politicians are all the same! [The same in that they all have the power to directly affect our lives and their jobs are 100% dependent on our approval? Yes, in that way they are all the same.]

2- I can’t choose between the two [So you’re not in love with either of the candidates; we’re assuming you were in love with the job you took, the faculty you majored in and every other detail in your life. If you’re at a legit voting age, you should know by now that we don’t always make choices in life because we love them: We have to make some choices because our future depends on it]

1- My vote won’t make a difference! [Your presence makes a difference! it says you’re a positive citizen who cares about how the country is run. Your presence states that you voice matters]

About Mariem El Tagoury

I am a graduate from German University Cairo. Reading novels is my passion and writing is my release. My guilty pleasures include fashion & playing around with my make-up kit. A couple of years back when I was introduced to the online world, back in 2007; I was quite surprised that in spite of the presence of thousands of young Egyptians who follow the online sphere daily, there wasn’t one site that represented us or our lifestyle. [Later we’d come to see the rise of the political, religion, social-elite, and foodie websites, but still the voice of the average Cairene youth was missing.] I was glad to find out that I wasn’t the only one who had the feeling of the outsider on the internet, that’s why I decided to gather a team to fill a gap & finally find our place online and give Cairo’s youth a real voice that reflects its true culture. I hope you find our site interesting with a new view of life. Besides running the magazine & editing, I write the “Sans Sugarcoating” column, pardon my french, and a couple of other stuff around here! If you want to contact me, my email is mariem.eltagoury@cairocontra.com; you can also use our contact form or email directly to admin@cairocontra.com
